History From the earliest human habitation of New Zealand by the Maori people the Manuka plant was known to have special therapeutic and medicinal properties.
The Maori people used the leaves and bark for a wide range of ailments, including urinary problems, to reduce fever, head colds, rubbed on stiff backs and joints, applied to scalds and burns, used to relieve constipation, as a gargle and for bathing sore eyes.
Captain James Cook described the Manuka plant as the ‘tea plant’ hence the name tea tree.
Cook wrote: “…the leaves were used by many of us as a tea which has a very agreeable bitter taste and flavour when they are recent but loses some of both when they are dried. When the infusion was made strong it proved emetic (induced vomiting) to some in the same manner as ‘green tea’”
