| Description | Shrub like tree growing about 7 metres tall, with flaky bark; the leaves are evergreen and needle-like. The flowers are produced in dense clusters along the stems; flower colour varies from white to pink, red, pale yellow or greenish. The fruit is a small capsule containing numerous minute seeds. |
| History |
Melaleuca comes from a Greek word melas meaning black and the word leukos meaning white. Dark leaves and white bark Historically, the leaves were used as a substitute for tea, which is how tea tree got its name. In WWII the oil was issued to soldiers and sailors for their kit to treat infected wounds and tropical infections. |

| Common Uses | Tea Tree is a wonderful antiseptic essential oil which can help maintain a healthy and balanced immune system; it has been traditionally used for coughs, flu, tonsillitis, sinus infections, bronchitis and colds. It is a deeply cleansing and antibacterial. It is useful in inhalations to clear the head. Its regeneration properties also reduce scar tissue and swelling which makes it perfect for healing wounds and insect bites. Including other skin problems like acne, pimples, abscesses, burns, herpes, oily skin, athlete's foot, cold sores, blemishes, diaper rash, warts, sunburn and infected wounds. For hair it assists with (controlling oil, dandruff and stimulates the scalp). Around the world, this oil is used with great effectiveness to ward off infections of any kind, and it is active in all three varieties of infectious organisms being bacteria, fungi and viruses. It can be used to help clear ringworm, vaginal thrush, cystitis, candida and genital infections. Can also help with glandular fever and gingivitis. |
