Description Wintergreen is a small evergreen herb which grows up to 15cm high with slender stems, leathery serrated leaves, drooping white flowers followed by fleshy scarlet berries.
History

Wintergreen has been used in traditional folk remedies which led to the discovery of methyl salicylate, its main ingredient, as a pain reliever. Wintergreen is a traditional native North American remedy, used for aches and pains and to help breathing while carrying heavy loads. Wintergreen Essential Oil contains 85-99% of methyl salicylate?

Birch and wintergreen are the only plants in the world that naturally contain methyl salicylate. 

Properties/Actions Anti-spasmodic, mentally stimulating and increases attentiveness.
Common Uses Wintergreen has a history of use as a pain reliever. It is also believed to increase the speed of healing for skin disorders, and when added to lotions, acts as a natural moisturiser.
Blends well with ylang ylang, peppermint, marjoram sweet, lavender, birch and vanilla
Caution Do not use if pregnant. Safety in young children, nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known so please avoid. Wintergreen oil is toxic and if taken internally can be fatal. Do not use if you are sensitive to salicylates. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dark place. For external use only.
